About this role

Role overview

Join a fully distributed product engineering team building consumer-facing text-to-speech software used by tens of millions of readers worldwide. As a senior engineer for Windows desktop applications, you will own the architecture and long-term direction of the native Windows client, with a strong focus on accessibility, performance, and inclusive design. This is a hands-on technical leadership role that blends deep systems work with cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using the Windows App SDK, WinUI or comparable UI frameworks, C#, XAML, and C++ where appropriate. - Establish and uphold engineering best practices across the Windows codebase, including code architecture, performance tuning, memory management, responsive UI, and cross-version compatibility for Windows 10 and 11. - Champion accessibility by integrating and validating support for Windows accessibility APIs, ensuring proper keyboard navigation, focus handling, screen-reader behavior, and usability for users with disabilities. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to shape feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and the long-term Windows roadmap. - Own the full feature lifecycle from concept and design through implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance. - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing durable architectural fixes.

Requirements

- Several years of professional Windows desktop development experience with Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar frameworks, C#, and XAML, plus familiarity with native code such as C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM. - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture and managed-to-native interop via .NET. - Demonstrated success shipping production-quality desktop applications that are reliable, performant, and maintainable. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a commitment to inclusive software design. - Strong computer science fundamentals: object-oriented design, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous or multi-threaded programming. - Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, reviewing code, and making architecture-level decisions, with clear communication and a user-centric mindset.

Nice to have

- Automated UI testing experience across unit, integration, and UI automation layers. - Performance optimization expertise for desktop apps, including startup time, rendering, high-DPI support, and load responsiveness. - Background in localization, globalization, right-to-left UI support, and multi-region accessibility. - Familiarity with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, and error monitoring in desktop environments. - Experience shaping CI/CD pipelines and release strategies for desktop software.

Benefits and work setup

- High-impact position defining the architecture and future direction of a widely used Windows product. - Collaborative, flat engineering culture with real autonomy over technical decisions. - Clear growth path toward tech lead or architect roles, including mentoring responsibilities. - Fully remote, distributed work environment with flexible, asynchronous collaboration.
