About this role
Role overview
This senior engineering role sits on a Core Experiences team responsible for the foundational services and SDKs that power a cross-platform audio reading product used by millions of people. The position lives at the intersection of product and infrastructure, with a focus on designing clean APIs and simple systems that improve how users absorb written content, including readers with learning differences such as dyslexia, ADD, and low vision. The work spans Kotlin-based cloud functions, lightweight backend services, and ongoing optimization of the shared SDK that product teams build on.
Responsibilities
- Partner with product teams to scope initiatives, trim scope for faster customer feedback, and weigh UX and integration tradeoffs across surfaces - Ship features through a cross-platform SDK that delivers a consistent experience across web, mobile, and desktop clients - Improve existing functionality such as loading speed and document parsing through tighter abstractions and smarter algorithms - Build and operate cloud functions, lightweight backend services, and asynchronous jobs using Kotlin - Maintain the core APIs and shared services that other product teams rely on
Requirements
- Strong systems-thinking mindset with a bias toward simplicity in API and service design - Ability to move quickly, evaluate options, and decide what can ship now versus what needs more time - Comfort working independently in a fast-paced remote environment while knowing when to engage cross-functionally - Track record collaborating effectively with designers, marketers, and product managers who hold strong opinions - Hands-on experience with Kotlin Multiplatform; Java background is acceptable as a foundation
Nice to have
- Prior experience building on Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
Benefits and work setup
- High-growth environment with room to help shape the product and the engineering culture - Entrepreneurial team that supports initiative, intuition, and a hands-off management style - Competitive compensation including base salary, bonus, and equity - US-based salary range of $140,000–$200,000 per year plus bonus and stock, depending on experience - Asynchronous-first culture with a friendly, laid-back atmosphere - Mission-driven work serving users with learning differences and operating at the intersection of AI and audio
