Remote job
ML & Agentic Systems Engineer [IC4]
Job details
About this role
Role overview Set the technical direction for a team that builds AI-powered developer experiences atop massive enterprise codebases. The role blends production machine learning with agent engineering: deciding which models to use and when, shaping multi-step agent loops, designing evaluations, and turning research into reliable, observable, affordable product surfaces. It's a staff-level position that owns the hardest, most ambiguous problems in code understanding and sets standards others follow.
Responsibilities - Design and harden multi-step, tool-using agent loops that power current and new agentic experiences at enterprise scale - Lead pragmatic evaluation strategy: choose where evaluations earn their keep, define targeted smoke tests and metrics, and avoid noise dressed up as rigor - Drive model selection, upgrades, and fine-tuning or distillation to cut cost and latency while protecting quality - Build retrieval and context-packing systems that give agents and humans the cross-repo context they need - Define standards, run design reviews, and raise the team's fluency in building production systems with models - Partner across engineering, product, and design to ship measurable improvements in speed, quality, and cost
Requirements - Substantial production experience as an ML or agent engineer, with shipped agent or LLM-powered systems - Deep familiarity with retrieval, context packing, prompt and tool design, and turning single LLM calls into reliable multi-step agents - Strong software engineering fundamentals; comfortable owning services end to end, not just notebooks - Working knowledge of model selection, fine-tuning, distillation, and evaluation design, including how to measure answer quality when both models and product keep changing - Experience operating with cloud infrastructure, observability, and production reliability practices - Ability to set technical direction across a team and influence beyond your immediate group
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first, globally distributed team with a preference for Europe or North America - Working hours must overlap with EST for at least 20 hours per week - IC4 base salary by zone: Zone 2 $176,000 USD, Zone 3 $132,000 USD, Zone 4 $88,000 USD, plus meaningful equity - Structured interview process of roughly 4.75 hours across recruiter, hiring manager, technical, cross-functional, and leadership stages
Nice to have - Background building developer tools, code search, or enterprise software at scale - Experience applying AI to large, complex, multi-repository codebases
