Job details
About this role
Role overview Take technical ownership of low-level systems that run scientific workloads in the cloud, with a focus on compute, storage, and scheduling. This hands-on staff-level role combines system design and implementation with architectural influence, performance work, and support for other engineers.
Responsibilities - Design, build, and maintain systems for cloud storage access, workload checkpointing and restore, process management, and compute scheduling. - Write reliable, well-tested code, primarily in Go and C, and contribute in Rust or JVM languages where needed. - Work close to Linux and operating system features, including FUSE filesystems, namespaces, process supervision, and signal handling. - Improve multi-cloud orchestration across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, including instance selection, autoscaling, spot-instance fault tolerance, and durable asynchronous queues. - Improve performance through techniques such as chunked I/O, caching, buffer pools, and bandwidth management. - Set technical direction, strengthen testing, observability, and operational practices, and mentor teammates.
Requirements - Staff-level software engineering experience and the ability to take ownership of complex systems. - Strong experience writing production software in Go and C. - Experience with Linux systems programming, such as FUSE, namespaces, process supervision, or checkpoint and restore. - Experience with cloud compute orchestration, scheduling, or multi-cloud systems. - Ability to guide architecture and raise engineering standards while collaborating with a team.
Nice to have - Experience with Rust, Groovy, Java, or Micronaut. - Familiarity with cloud batch services, applied machine learning or data engineering, or open-source systems work.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-friendly work, with flexible hours and an international team. - Annual leave includes 23 vacation days, three additional days in December, and local public holidays. - Equity, private health and life insurance, and a home office allowance. - Annual learning and development budget and access to a mental health app.
