Job details
About this role
Role overview Lead engineering for an established software business, working full time with its team to improve a product customers already depend on. You’ll take hands-on responsibility for shipping features, guiding technical direction, and strengthening the team’s ways of working. The role calls for adapting quickly to the company’s existing technology and making practical improvements while keeping delivery moving.
Responsibilities - Learn the existing codebase and technology stack, then deliver useful changes to customers early and regularly. - Improve the software delivery process with practices such as automated builds, testing, staging, feature flags, and reliable deployments. - Coach the engineers on the team and help them improve their technical practices. - Work with the general manager to set the product roadmap and weigh delivery trade-offs. - Introduce coding agents into daily engineering work and help the team use them effectively. - Build AI capabilities into the product, including retrieval, tool use, evaluation, and safeguards for production use.
Requirements - At least seven years of software engineering experience, including experience leading engineering or serving as a key engineer in a small organization. - Production experience across at least three technology stacks, with the ability to learn unfamiliar ones quickly. - Experience taking over a difficult codebase or helping a team regain momentum. - Regular use of coding agents, with the ability to explain and demonstrate your workflow. - Strong independent judgment and the ability to work directly with business leaders, operators, and customers.
Nice to have - Experience as the first engineering leader at a company. - Background in vertical or B2B SaaS, particularly products where buyers and everyday users differ. - Experience modernizing a legacy codebase incrementally, without a full rewrite.
Benefits and work setup You’ll be embedded full time with one portfolio business. The technology stack varies by business and may include .NET, Rails, Python, TypeScript, Oracle, PHP, or other technologies. Some engineers remain with one business for years; others move to a different one over time.
