Role overview
Own reliability for messaging infrastructure and distributed backend services supporting a new multiplayer strategy game. This senior engineering role bridges infrastructure and application teams: it makes system behavior observable, helps teams diagnose failures, and turns operational lessons into lasting improvements and self-service tools.
Responsibilities
- Operate and improve messaging clusters and streaming systems, with a focus on dependable service and clear operational visibility. - Define metrics, logs, and traces that reveal issues across distributed services, and promote consistent instrumentation. - Correlate infrastructure conditions such as latency and resource saturation with application signals such as throughput, consumer lag, and retries to find root causes. - Establish service-level objectives and error-budget practices for backend services and messaging pipelines. - Build reliability tools, runbooks, and operational processes that let engineering teams manage routine reliability needs themselves. - Participate in incident response, lead or contribute to postmortems, and implement preventive fixes with engineering partners.
Requirements
- Strong experience in site reliability, production operations, or backend engineering with substantial operational responsibility. - Production experience with NATS or NATS JetStream, or deep experience with a comparable distributed messaging system; knowledge of leader election, consensus, and log replication. - Ability to read and reason about application code, identify operational risks, and collaborate on code-level fixes. - Experience designing observability across distributed systems and debugging issues spanning infrastructure and application layers. - Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure and containerized workloads, such as AWS and Kubernetes, ECS, or equivalent. - Strong communication skills and an infrastructure-as-code approach to managing systems and reliability configuration.
