Role overview
This position leads the engineering team responsible for the payment systems that move funds during residential real estate closings, including earnest money deposits, loan funding, mortgage payoffs, seller proceeds, and commissions. It is a hands-on engineering manager role with a player/coach dynamic, focused on infrastructure that processes billions of dollars in annual transaction volume. The role also calls for rethinking workflows and team operations as AI tooling takes on more of the routine engineering work.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the payments engineering team in a player/coach capacity, contributing technically while mentoring engineers - Design, build, and maintain systems for ACH and wire transfers at scale, covering origination, settlement, reconciliation, and exception handling - Develop and harden payment-processing pipelines that integrate with banking partners, payment rails, and third-party financial APIs - Implement controls for wire fraud prevention, transaction verification, and anomaly detection alongside security and compliance teams - Extend full-stack web applications that support escrow accounting and closing-day money movement - Own architectural decisions related to data integrity, idempotency, retry and failure handling, and audit logging - Partner with Compliance, Risk, and Accounting stakeholders to meet regulatory and audit requirements such as NACHA rules, wire fraud regulations, and SOC 2 controls
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience as a full-stack web developer and 2+ years managing a payments engineering team - Direct, hands-on experience building production payment systems where reliability and liability are critical - Proven ability to lead complex fintech projects and make defensible architectural decisions backed by research - Comfort owning projects end-to-end and collaborating with design, compliance, and customer-facing partners - Ability to stay calm and methodical when responding to incidents that involve funds in transit - Experience integrating with banking partners, payment rails, and third-party financial APIs
