About this role
Role overview
Build and evolve a core e-commerce backend that handles orders, checkout, billing, and subscriptions. The work includes maintaining services written in Elixir and Phoenix and gradually moving business logic from a serverless legacy system, with ownership spanning design through release.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain backend services, APIs, and core platform features in Elixir and Phoenix. - Understand existing behavior and migrate legacy business logic in manageable stages. - Clarify requirements with stakeholders, assess trade-offs, and break larger changes into deliverable pieces. - Document architecture decisions, improve code, and address performance and reliability issues. - Test critical paths, edge cases, and service interactions; use monitoring to assess releases. - Review code, mentor colleagues, improve engineering practices, and communicate dependencies and delivery risks.
Requirements
- At least five years of relevant technical experience. - Strong Elixir/Phoenix experience, or senior experience with a language and framework grounded in similar functional, concurrent, or message-based principles. - Experience building reliable systems and taking features from technical decisions through implementation and release. - Ability to reason about service dependencies, testing, performance, and operational reliability. - Effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders and other engineers.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL, AWS-hosted services, Node.js serverless systems, or e-commerce and payment integrations. - Experience improving CI/CD, development tools, coding standards, or documentation.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote work is available within Germany; residence and a valid German work permit are required. Berlin is preferred, and office visits may be required up to four times a year. - English is the working language. The role includes flexible hours, career development support, a personal development budget, coaching, team events, and a choice of Mac or Windows equipment. - Hiring includes remote introductory conversations and two weekday, in-person coding sessions in Berlin.
