Senior Full Stack Engineer

Role overview

A senior full-stack engineer is needed to embed within a federal natural hazards science program, building cloud-ready database and visualization tools used in service work for volcano monitoring and evaluation workflows. The role partners with scientists, program managers, and stakeholders across multiple regional observatories to track performance, visualize geospatial hazard data, and produce evidence-based reporting tools. The position is remote, with periodic on-site visits to program offices throughout the year.

Responsibilities

- Design and implement a relational database using PostgreSQL with PostGIS that supports spatial data, validation logic, views, stored procedures, and comprehensive data dictionaries; architect for mobile accessibility. - Build RESTful APIs in Python (FastAPI or Flask), develop data ingestion tools and ETL pipelines, and conduct unit and integration testing of backend components. - Develop responsive, accessible front-end web applications using modern JavaScript/TypeScript and React, including interactive geospatial visualizations. - Produce and maintain technical documentation (user guides, API references, system schemas, deployment guides) following agency coding and documentation conventions. - Apply WCAG 2.0 Level A and AA accessibility through semantic HTML, ARIA, contrast, and keyboard navigation; remediate any non-conforming features. - Complete required security awareness training, adhere to federal security frameworks (FISMA, NIST), support certification and accreditation activities, and report incidents per agency procedure. - Participate in weekly check-ins, provide written progress updates, and coordinate with teams across multiple observatories to maintain system interoperability; travel up to three times per year (3–5 business days each) for on-site working sessions.

Requirements

- Bachelor's degree with 8 years of professional experience, Master's with 6 years, Associate's with 10 years, or equivalent combination including 12 years with a high school diploma. - U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance; all work performed within the United States. - Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and optimizing PostgreSQL/PostGIS databases with spatial data types, indexing, and complex query development. - Proficiency building Python RESTful APIs with FastAPI or Flask, plus data ingestion and ETL workflows. - Strong front-end development using JavaScript/TypeScript and React, including responsive, accessible web applications. - Hands-on GIS/geospatial experience with ArcGIS, ArcPy, GDAL/OGR, PostGIS, and at least one web mapping library such as Leaflet or Mapbox. - Experience with REST API design, data modeling aligned with federal metadata standards, and cloud-ready or containerized architecture. - Proficiency with Git-based workflows and familiarity with federal IT security compliance (FISMA, NIST SP 800-53) and Certification & Accreditation processes.

Nice to have

- Mobile-responsive design experience for field or remote use. - Deep familiarity with NIST publications including SP 800-37, 800-18, 800-30, 800-64, 800-34, FIPS 199, and FIPS 200. - Experience working within a federal System Development Life Cycle and Security Integration Guide. - Agile or iterative milestone-driven development with government review cycles. - Experience building editable CMS-style frameworks that allow non-technical users to manage content and workflows.
