About this role
Role overview
Design and refine optical components for photonic integrated circuits, taking them from simulation and fabrication through integration and testing. The work spans optical design, manufacturing drawings, and analysis of test results, with close collaboration across design, microfabrication, electronics, and mechanical engineering teams. The role is based in Montréal.
Responsibilities - Design, simulate, fabricate, integrate, and test optical components such as lenses, semiconductor optical amplifiers, frequency-doubling devices, and fiber ribbons. - Create and review fabrication drawings with attention to process constraints and integration into photonic circuits. - Analyze measurements from fabricated components and improve designs for reliability and high-volume production. - Coordinate design and testing work with colleagues in related engineering disciplines.
Requirements - Master’s degree or PhD in physics, engineering physics, or a related field. - Experience designing optical systems and familiarity with optical simulation tools such as Zemax. - Careful, precise working style and a strong sense of responsibility. - Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team. - Effective spoken and written French; English is useful for collaboration with international partners and specialists.
Nice to have - Experience designing integrated photonic devices or characterizing optical systems. - Experience with lasers or other active optical components. - Programming skills in Python or C#, and familiarity with 2D or 3D design software. - Authorization to work in Canada without sponsorship is preferred.
Benefits and work setup - Full-time, permanent position in Montréal, with a collaborative international team. - Four weeks of vacation starting annually, team outings, and time for learning and attending conferences or meetups.
