Job details
About this role
Role overview Set technical direction and architecture across an engineering division building software workflows that connect healthcare providers, plans, and equipment suppliers. This is a hands-on leadership role: guide multiple teams through foundational improvements and ambiguous technical challenges while contributing code and keeping delivery moving.
Responsibilities - Define architecture standards and a coherent target state across the division’s systems. - Lead incremental refactoring of a shared codebase to establish clearer domain ownership and team independence. - Turn ambiguous, cross-team problems into technical decisions, plans, and shipped software. - Drive transparent design discussions and document decisions to build alignment. - Establish effective use of AI coding tools, including agentic development and accelerated review and testing. - Prototype, write production code on critical paths, and review designs and changes across teams. - Guide technical discovery and sizing; balance engineering investment against cost and business impact. - Set expectations for testing, observability, and on-call health, and develop senior engineers into technical leaders.
Requirements - At least 12 years of production software experience, including substantial time at Staff level or above. - Experience setting architecture across multiple teams or an engineering organization using Ruby on Rails or a comparable stack such as Python, Go, or TypeScript. - A track record of leading large-scale refactoring or decomposition of a shared domain model. - Ability to make and own high-impact technical decisions amid ambiguity and align engineering, product, and leadership partners. - Daily hands-on use of AI coding tools and a clear perspective on their effects on architecture and engineering practice. - Excellent written communication, including design documents and decision records. - Must reside in the United States.
Nice to have - Healthcare or other regulated-domain experience, including FHIR, HL7, EHR integrations, clinical, or payer workflows. - Experience designing production LLM-backed or agentic systems. - Experience with large shared codebases and explicit domain boundaries. - Deep familiarity with AWS services such as ECS, RDS, and S3.
