(Senior) Mobile Engineer (React Native)
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A senior, hands-on mobile engineering role focused on building AirSpot, a public-facing mobile application for reporting drone sightings and giving law enforcement and defense teams real-time airspace intelligence. The app is built with React Native and Expo, including the New Architecture, and covers geospatial experiences, reporting workflows, maps, alerts, and offline-capable features. The role is part of a small early team, with direct ownership of mobile architecture, performance, and delivery.
Responsibilities
- Build and ship production mobile features using React Native, Expo, TypeScript, and Expo Router. - Own architectural decisions across state management, data fetching, offline behavior, navigation, and the mobile build and release pipeline. - Build geospatial experiences with MapLibre, including real-time location and map interactions. - Improve performance and reliability across startup time, animations, lists, memory, battery, and crash behavior. - Establish testing with Jest, React Native Testing Library, and Maestro, and own production delivery through EAS, including builds, signing, releases, and app store readiness. - Contribute to backend APIs where useful and help establish engineering standards as the team grows. - Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery without compromising quality.
Requirements
- Several years of professional software engineering experience, including at least two production React Native apps with real users. - Strong React Native, TypeScript, and Expo experience, including the New Architecture (Fabric, TurboModules, Bridgeless). - Hands-on experience with MapLibre, Mapbox, Google Maps, or comparable mobile mapping technologies. - Experience with mobile performance, testing, observability, and production releases. - Evidence of owning architecture or major technical decisions, not just implementing predefined features. - University-level technical education in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. - Eligible to work in Germany and, where required, eligible for EU/NATO security clearance.
Nice to have
- Node.js, Bun, or other backend experience. - Reanimated, Gesture Handler, and advanced React Native animations. - Geospatial, aviation, ADS-B, drone, or real-time location experience. - Experience with EAS/Fastlane and mobile CI/CD pipelines. - Defense, law enforcement, or other regulated-environment experience. - German language skills and open-source contributions to React Native or Expo.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote-first role based anywhere in Germany, with regular team gatherings in Berlin, Dresden, and other off-site locations. - Flexible working hours and a personal home-office equipment budget. - 30 days of vacation, plus team events and an onboarding welcome package. - Performance bonuses tied to agreed objectives and key results, plus investment in personal and professional development.
