Remote job
Senior Engineering Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering
Job details
About this role
Role overview Manage a forward-deployed engineering team that embeds with clients to build integrations and identify platform capabilities that should be developed for reuse. Success means clients reach production with a clear handoff while the team improves its delivery practices and scales without compromising engineering standards. This is a coaching-focused player-coach role: technical involvement centers on design and code review rather than personally owning client implementations.
Responsibilities - Track deployment health across clients, assign clear owners and launch dates, and surface delivery risks with their impact and trade-offs. - Allocate team capacity across new client work, migrations, and platform needs, making priorities and displaced work explicit. - Lead deployment teams through technical architects, establishing ownership, decision rights, and early escalation habits. - Coordinate client migrations to a partner API with implementation, platform, and client teams, respecting change windows and tracking production outcomes. - Route integration gaps to the right owners, keep changes compatible with live clients, and give each launch a documented, scheduled exit from hypercare. - Hire and develop engineers and deployment strategists, oversee human-reviewed use of agents in deployment work, and turn effective practices into a repeatable playbook.
Requirements - At least 8 years in software engineering, including 3 or more years managing engineers and handling hiring, performance, and career growth. - Experience leading teams that deliver in customer environments, including learning from difficult deployments. - Experience managing customer migrations or re-platforming and balancing demand against limited team capacity. - Strong technical understanding of integrations, including APIs, authentication, webhooks, idempotency, schema changes, and reconciliation. - Experience building with AI agents and designing human review, evaluation, and safeguards for errors. - Security-conscious approach to sensitive data and compliance, with the judgment to negotiate scope and timelines with customers and sales.
Nice to have - Healthcare or other regulated-domain experience; integrations involving EHRs, scheduling, pharmacy, payments, or FHIR. - Experience managing managers or scaling an FDE, solutions engineering, or professional services function. - Developer platform experience, such as SDKs, CLIs, API conventions, and tested documentation; pre-sales technical experience. - Computer science or engineering degree, or equivalent experience.
Benefits and work setup Benefits listed for salaried roles include medical, dental, and vision coverage; flexible spending or health savings accounts; flexible paid time off; a matched 401(k); and life and pet insurance.
