Senior Staff Performance Engineer, Firefox

Role overview

A senior performance engineering role on the team responsible for making a major open-source web browser fast across Windows, Android, Linux, and macOS. The team is geographically distributed, works in the open, and combines hands-on profiling with cross-org technical leadership to improve every layer of a large, evolving browser codebase.

Responsibilities

- Write code and tests, build prototypes, and profile and analyze performance bottlenecks across a complex multi-platform codebase. - Work in several programming languages, with a primary emphasis on C++ and JavaScript, alongside Kotlin, Rust, or Python as needed. - Educate engineers across the organization on writing performant code through code reviews, talks, tooling, and documentation. - Independently define actionable next steps from high-level performance objectives. - Lead and assist performance efforts with engineering teams across the organization. - Shape the future of performance benchmarks and set priorities for the improvements that matter most. - Develop strategies for the long-term direction of the performance team and the broader engineering organization.

Requirements

- BS or MS in Computer Science or Computer Engineering and 7+ years of relevant experience. - Mastered proficiency in C++ and working knowledge of JavaScript. - Proven track record developing performance-critical software, with an experimental, measurement-driven approach to diagnosing and solving problems. - Strong skill in debugging bottlenecks and using profiling tools such as VTune, Xperf, or other sampling-based profilers. - Experience with multithreading and concurrency, disk I/O, and GPU-related performance. - History of setting team goals and motivating cross-functional teams to deliver on shared objectives, with strong asynchronous written communication for a distributed setup.

Nice to have

- Familiarity with web standards and patterns. - Familiarity with Android or Windows OS application programming. - A solid understanding of statistics. - Prior experience working on a modern web browser.
