Remote job
Contract Staff Front End Engineer (Web Conference/Screen Sharing)
Job details
About this role
Role overview A distributed engineering team that owns media capture and content-sharing inside a major open-source web browser is preparing to ship a redesigned screensharing experience. The supporting backend work is already complete and the user experience has been designed and approved, so this fixed-term contract role is focused on the front-end implementation needed to bring it to release. The work centers on translating approved designs into a polished, accessible, and localizable interface inside a very large, widely used codebase.
Responsibilities - Implement approved UX designs for screen, window, and tab sharing flows and carry the work through to release - Build browser UI that meets the quality bar of a large, widely deployed codebase: tested, accessible, and prepared for localization - Collaborate closely with designers on cases the original spec did not anticipate, and partner with QA on validating the result - Support integration testing against major third-party video calling services that depend on the capture APIs - Land changes in the project's main source repository through public, asynchronous code review
Requirements - Four or more years of professional experience building production user interfaces with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS - A track record of faithfully implementing approved designs, paired with the judgment to flag when a design breaks on an unanticipated case - Ability to get productive quickly inside a large, mature codebase that you did not author - Hands-on experience writing automated tests for user interfaces - Strong asynchronous written communication, since the team is distributed across multiple timezones - Comfort working in the open, as the issue tracker and code review tools are public
Nice to have - Prior contributions to an open-source web browser project - Familiarity with a large browser's front-end architecture, including custom elements, legacy UI markup, and a runtime localization system - Experience with WebRTC or the getDisplayMedia capture API - Accessibility work involving modal dialogs and keyboard-navigable lists - Familiarity with browser-chrome and mochitest-style automated test frameworks - Using AI-assisted tooling effectively in front-end development - Prior experience working in an open-source community environment
Benefits and work setup This is a fixed-term contract role. Disclosed pay bands are CAD 145,000–170,800 for Canada Tier 1 locations and USD 154,000–168,000 for Canada Tier 2 locations. The team is distributed across timezones, so the position is remote-friendly and relies heavily on written, asynchronous communication.
