Staff Software Engineer - Services Platform

Role overview

Own technical direction and delivery for the shared platform that engineering teams use to build, deploy, and operate independent services. The work spans service identity and communication, deployment safety, runtime architecture, and observability. You’ll combine deep infrastructure engineering with organization-wide influence, setting useful defaults while helping teams adopt them and keeping existing services reliable through change.

Responsibilities

- Define and build shared capabilities for deploying, operating, and evolving services. - Set direction for service identity, authentication, discovery, and communication between services. - Develop a dependable deployment path with practical defaults for releases, rollbacks, configuration, secrets, and operational safety. - Evolve the service runtime, including Kubernetes use, while supporting healthy migrations for existing services. - Make monitoring and debugging tools accessible to product engineers without requiring constant infrastructure team assistance. - Partner with security, release engineering, and product teams to meet financial compliance needs and encourage platform adoption. - Identify high-impact infrastructure gaps, ship pragmatic improvements, and mentor engineers across the organization.

Requirements

- Deep experience operating Kubernetes in production, including deployment design, failure modes, and migrations. - Significant ownership of service-to-service authentication, workload identity, service discovery, service mesh, or related distributed systems. - Experience building self-service observability or operational tools for application teams. - Sound judgment about what to standardize, when to preserve flexibility, and when not to build. - Product-minded approach to internal platforms, including adoption, usability, documentation, defaults, and escape hatches. - Ability to align teams with differing goals and clearly explain technical tradeoffs.

Nice to have

- Experience building developer platforms or service infrastructure in a large engineering organization. Demonstrated system outcomes and successful adoption matter more than employer pedigree.

- Compensation includes base pay, equity, and benefits. Target base pay is listed as $239,000–$298,800 USD for US-based employees and $225,900–$282,400 USD for Canada-based employees; offers vary with experience, expertise, location, and internal equity.
