Job details
About this role
Role overview As a staff-level backend engineer on a submission processing team, you’ll shape systems that use language models to extract information from large volumes of unstructured data. The resulting insights support consequential decisions in insurance workflows, so the role combines backend architecture, production AI engineering, and a strong focus on correctness and scale. You’ll own major technical decisions and help set the team’s direction.
Responsibilities - Design and scale production systems that process unstructured documents and data with language models. - Make architectural decisions and guide technical direction amid complex, ambiguous problems. - Build reliable backend services that extract precise information and surface useful insights. - Own work end to end, from exploring an approach through measuring results and delivery. - Collaborate with a small, cross-functional team and keep stakeholders informed as work progresses.
Requirements - At least eight years of software engineering experience. - Experience deploying language models in production and scaling AI-enabled systems. - Strong system design, debugging, and problem-solving skills. - Experience with AWS or other cloud environments, serverless services, and asynchronous workflows. - Proficiency in Python, or strong experience in another object-oriented language. - Comfort working with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL, and taking independent ownership of complex projects.
Nice to have - Experience building document processing pipelines or handling large-scale data.
Benefits and work setup - The distributed team holds regional meetups and global offsites. - The package includes equity options, 20 days of annual paid time off, and stipends for fitness, phone, and continuing education. - The listed estimated compensation range is $100,000–$185,000 USD; final compensation may vary by experience, interview performance, and location.
