Job details
About this role
Role overview This is a founding-engineer seat on a small, senior team embedded in executive leadership and charged with reinventing how a large organization operates in the AI era. The mandate is broad: design and ship internal AI systems that touch every function, set the technical bar for trustworthy AI, and turn prototypes into production systems that outlast the team that built them. Expect a builder's pace, weekly exposure to senior leaders, and ownership of architecture, quality, and the hard trust-and-permissions problems.
Responsibilities - Architect and build new internal AI systems end to end, from initial design through production deployment, as the founding engineer - Own the hard parts of trustworthy AI at company scale: retrieval quality, permissions, security, and reliability - Work hands-on across the modern AI stack, including large language models, retrieval, agents, and integrations, while keeping foundational choices pragmatic - Embed with teams across functions, partnering with leaders and their groups to ship AI into real workflows and transfer ownership - Run rapid build-versus-buy evaluations and proof-of-concepts, committing decisively and ending them quickly when warranted - Set the technical standards every AI initiative at the organization is held to - Brief executive leadership directly, translating technical trade-offs into decisions the company acts on
Requirements - Track record of shipping production systems at Staff-plus scope: data infrastructure, retrieval, or applied AI used daily by hundreds to thousands of dependent users - Hands-on depth across the modern AI stack, with at least one production experience that exposed failure modes of confident-but-wrong AI - Pragmatic technology instincts: default to proven tools and defend the exceptions - Founding-engineer, consulting, or forward-deployed background, comfortable owning outcomes inside someone else's domain - Daily working fluency with AI tools and agents as both instruments to build with and products to build for - Demonstrated ability to ship every few weeks without lowering quality bars, plus the communication skills to explain trade-offs to a C-level audience
Benefits and work setup - Total compensation package that includes extended health benefits with fully covered premiums, retirement plan matching (RRSP, TFSA, or FHSA), and stock options - Access to a dedicated talent development team plus coaching, learning, and leadership programs - Opportunity to shape a large, fragmented industry that currently has no dominant player - Commitment to inclusive hiring, with accommodations available at every stage of the process
