Lead Software Engineer - AI

Role overview Shape the technical architecture of AI systems powering clinical tools and intelligent automation for a primary care organization serving hundreds of clinics. As a lead engineer, you will own end-to-end design decisions across LLM-powered features, RAG pipelines, and multi-agent workflows, partnering with clinicians, product, and data stakeholders.

Responsibilities - Design and own the end-to-end architecture of AI systems, including LLM-powered clinical tools, RAG pipelines, agent-based workflows, and intelligent automation - Evaluate, select, and where appropriate guide fine-tuning of foundation models, and establish evaluation frameworks that prioritize safety, accuracy, and clinical relevance - Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, clinicians, and data stakeholders to translate care delivery workflows into well-scoped, high-impact AI features - Ensure all AI systems are designed, deployed, and monitored in compliance with HIPAA and internal Responsible AI standards, including participation in relevant AI review and governance processes - Advise on and drive quality assurance procedures for AI software, including testing, debugging, and root-cause investigation of issues

Requirements - B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience) - 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 4+ years focused on production AI/ML systems - Deep, hands-on experience building with large language models and orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex - Strong proficiency in Python and TypeScript, plus modern ML tooling such as Hugging Face or PyTorch - Proven experience designing and deploying RAG pipelines and vector search systems in production - Working knowledge of model fine-tuning approaches (LoRA, RLHF, instruction tuning) - Experience designing custom LLM and agent evaluation frameworks, including automated pipelines and benchmark construction - Experience designing multi-agent AI systems, including orchestration, tool use, and sandboxed execution - Understanding of HIPAA requirements and secure handling of PHI, plus strong communication across technical and non-technical audiences

Nice to have - Experience in healthcare, clinical informatics, or other highly regulated industries - Exposure to clinical NLP, medical coding, or EHR/FHIR data standards - Experience operating AI systems at scale on AWS, Azure, or GCP
