AI Labs Engineer

Role overview

This position joins an internal AI Labs function at a venture-backed, mission-driven startup that works on expanding access to education and career opportunities. The seat is designed for an early-career engineer coming in as the second member of the team, with the mission of turning AI into practical, day-to-day tools that colleagues actually use. The work spans the full product loop, from understanding user workflows to identifying the right problem, building across the stack, launching, observing usage, and iterating.

Responsibilities

- Own problems end-to-end from discovery through adoption by working directly with internal users to understand workflows, ship solutions across the stack, and measure whether they helped - Build and refine internal AI agents and tools, including their instructions, tool definitions, guardrails, evaluations, and human handoff paths - Document decisions, setup steps, risks, and operating procedures while flagging architectural, security, privacy, compliance, or production concerns early - Run enablement programs such as ambassador groups, informal AI sessions, and learning events while pairing with colleagues to turn ideas into shipped products - Stay current with new models, agent patterns, and industry developments, then test what is genuinely useful in real workflows

Requirements

- Demonstrated evidence of having shipped at least one tool, product, or project beyond personal use - Practical fluency with AI models and development tools, including the ability to explain where they help, where they fail, what was verified, and how to evaluate quality - Full-stack range spanning interfaces, backend logic, APIs and integrations, data flows, testing, and deployment, with enough breadth to own a bounded feature end-to-end - Product judgment grounded in talking to users, clarifying the decision the product should enable, choosing the smallest useful version, and measuring impact - Fast learner who asks for help with useful context, operates with incomplete information, wants coaching, and applies it
