Software Engineer, Backend (Platform)

Role overview Join the Backend Platform team at a Senior or Staff level to build and evolve the core compute engine behind a modern analytics platform. The work spans code execution, SQL querying, and data processing that powers notebook interfaces, published applications, and AI agent capabilities. Engineers operate at the intersection of systems architecture, API design, and deep performance optimization.

Responsibilities - Work on high-complexity projects spanning backend data systems and the collaborative notebook frontend. - Use DuckDB to enable seamless data interoperability between Python and SQL code authored by users and AI agents. - Build intelligent caching systems that accelerate customer data queries. - Implement graph-based dependency frameworks for optimizing multi-step execution plans. - Instrument multi-language systems to surface performance bottlenecks. - Develop product visualizations that help users understand the performance characteristics of their code.

Requirements - 6+ years of engineering experience on complex, data-driven systems or applications. - Expert-level knowledge of Python, SQL, Jupyter kernels, and/or data warehousing systems. - Strong grasp of industry trends in data processing, databases, and performant architectures. - Comfort navigating highly complex codebases and designing elegant abstractions. - Persistent curiosity about where every millisecond of latency could be eliminated. - Strategic instincts that balance velocity with engineering excellence while aligning to business goals. - Experience working effectively on a remote-first team.

Benefits and work setup Fully remote within the US Eastern time zone, with the option to work from a New York City office. Salary range of $198,750 to $295,000, plus equity, comprehensive health benefits, and flexible paid time off.
