Staff Backend Engineer, Aave App

Role overview

A Staff Backend Engineer is needed to build the backend infrastructure powering a consumer savings application that makes onchain (blockchain-based) financial products simple, secure, and intuitive for everyday users. The position sits at the intersection of decentralized finance protocols and consumer-facing experiences, with broad technical ownership spanning account services, wallet infrastructure, and the systems that handle real customer transactions. The work calls for high ownership, strong security instincts, and operational discipline in production environments where correctness is non-negotiable.

Responsibilities

- Design, build, and operate backend services spanning onboarding, funding, savings, withdrawals, portfolio data, and customer communications for a consumer savings product - Develop transaction-orchestration and indexing services that safely prepare, submit, monitor, and reconcile onchain activity across its full lifecycle - Integrate backend systems with smart contracts and RPC providers, ensuring robust interactions with underlying blockchain infrastructure - Build account and wallet services, balances and yield data pipelines, funding and withdrawal flows, and notification systems that support end-user journeys - Deliver performant, well-documented APIs consumed by mobile and web clients - Apply sound judgment to threat modelling, sensitive data handling, permissions, and the operational risks of systems moving financial value

Requirements

- Significant experience designing and operating production backend services, including relational databases, caching, queues, and observability tooling - Hands-on experience with blockchain systems, particularly transaction signing, private-key or key-management flows, wallet infrastructure, and onchain transaction lifecycles - Strong security mindset, with demonstrated judgment around permissions, threat modelling, and the operational risks of systems that handle financial value - Ability to translate ambiguous product goals into well-architected, reliable, and maintainable production systems - High bar for code quality, craftsmanship, and attention to detail, with the ability to own a broad technical area independently

Nice to have

- Experience with EVM-compatible networks, smart accounts, account abstraction, bridges, or decentralized finance protocols - Background building consumer fintech, savings, wallet, exchange, or payments products at meaningful scale - Familiarity with cross-chain indexing, large-scale data ingestion, Kafka, ClickHouse, or comparable data infrastructure
