Staff Software Engineer, PEO Benefits
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A Staff Software Engineer is needed to help build out a new Professional Employer Organization (PEO) Benefits platform from the ground up. The offering is anchored by a national master health plan designed to unlock materially lower healthcare costs for small businesses through pooled purchasing power, a capability most new PEOs struggle to deliver. The role spans the full product lifecycle, from early specification and architectural decisions through launch and long-term iteration, blending backend API work with clean frontend craft.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test the PEO Benefits experience, including benefits shopping flows, plan recommendation features, carrier integrations, and tooling that automates operational and customer support processes - Develop reliable backend APIs and well-structured frontend code within a large-scale Ruby on Rails and React application - Mentor engineers working on technically demanding problems in complex domains - Partner with product management, data, design, and platform engineering to identify customer pain points, shape solutions, and ship iteratively - Take ownership of post-launch quality, iterating on features based on real-world feedback
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional software development experience - Demonstrated ability to own multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and produce measurable customer impact at scale - Experience driving large, cross-functional initiatives end-to-end through ambiguity, including scoping, sequencing, stakeholder alignment, and unblocking without hand-holding - Hands-on experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, or ship new capabilities - Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, with a willingness to share best practices for safe evaluation and scaling across teams - Strong communication skills across engineering teams and with non-technical business stakeholders
Nice to have
- 3+ years of experience with PEO products, ideally building PEO flows directly in a high-growth environment - Working knowledge of Ruby on Rails - Comfort in a collaborative, test-driven engineering culture - Track record of writing well-structured, maintainable, and well-documented code
Benefits and work setup
- Cash compensation targeted at $163,000–$204,000 for most remote locations and Denver-based candidates, and $197,000–$247,000 for San Francisco and New York-based candidates, with additional stock equity - Full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity - Hybrid model with in-office expectations of approximately 2–3 days per week for employees based near designated office hubs - Secure, reliable internet connection required for remote and home-based work days - Travel to a designated office required for onboarding
