Role overview

This Staff-level Backend Engineer role supports an early-stage initiative building an AI-native data intelligence system that gives AI agents reliable, governed access to enterprise context such as metadata, lineage, and quality signals. The engineer will design and ship the first production services for context ingestion, storage, retrieval, and agent-facing integrations on a high-autonomy team operating across multiple European countries. The position is fully remote within Spain, Sweden, the UK, Ireland, or Germany.

Responsibilities

- Design, implement, test, and operate core backend services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration, APIs, source configuration, and administration. - Help define and build the architecture for a scalable multi-tenant SaaS foundation, including tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, and reliable service boundaries. - Build APIs and service interfaces that allow AI agents, MCP tools, CLIs, and internal applications to retrieve relevant context along with provenance, confidence signals, and warnings. - Partner across product and infrastructure to balance fast experimentation with long-term reliability as the system moves from prototype to production. - Operate what is built by instrumenting services with appropriate observability and supporting on-call practices as the platform matures.

Requirements

- Significant backend engineering experience designing and shipping production services, ideally on a modern cloud platform. - Strong systems design skills with the ability to make pragmatic architectural decisions in ambiguous, early-stage environments. - Proficiency with Go, Rust, Java, or similar backend languages, and comfort building APIs and service-to-service interfaces. - Familiarity with multi-tenant SaaS concerns such as isolation, quotas, audit logging, and background processing. - Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with comfort working autonomously on a globally distributed team.

Nice to have

- Experience with observability, retrieval systems, vector or search infrastructure, or context engineering for AI agents. - Background contributing to or consuming open-source projects.
