Staff Backend Engineer, EMEA

Role overview

A staff backend engineering role based remotely in Poland, supporting the EMEA region of a globally distributed engineering organization. The engineer combines hands-on technical leadership with cross-team collaboration, owning significant pieces of the platform and helping shape engineering culture across time zones. The role suits a senior generalist who is comfortable moving from architecture and design docs down to code review.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design and delivery of large backend initiatives from proposal through production rollout - Write, review, and maintain production code in one or more backend languages and frameworks - Mentor engineers across multiple teams, raising the bar for design, testing, and code review - Partner with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to scope and sequence complex work - Contribute to architectural discussions that span services, data models, and shared infrastructure

Requirements

- Proven experience at a staff or equivalent senior level within a sizable backend organization - Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, APIs, data modeling, and performance engineering - Working knowledge of a major cloud platform such as AWS, GCP, or Azure - Track record leading cross-team technical initiatives without relying on direct line management - Strong written communication skills for asynchronous collaboration across regions
