Staff Backend Engineer, AMER

Role overview This is a senior-level backend engineering position focused on designing, building, and maintaining the server-side systems that power a large-scale software platform. The role sits within a distributed engineering organization and is intended for an experienced engineer who can lead complex projects end-to-end while remaining hands-on with code. Work is performed remotely from anywhere in the Americas, with hires permitted in both Canada and the United States.

Responsibilities - Design, implement, and operate scalable backend services and APIs that serve production traffic - Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives, breaking down ambiguous problems into clear engineering plans - Mentor other engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and pairing sessions - Partner with product, frontend, infrastructure, and quality stakeholders to deliver cross-functional features - Investigate and resolve complex production issues, improving reliability and performance over time - Contribute to architectural decisions and technical direction across one or more product areas

Requirements - Several years of professional experience building and operating production backend systems - Proficiency in one or more mainstream backend languages commonly used for high-availability services - Deep understanding of databases, distributed systems, and service-oriented architecture - Strong written communication skills suitable for working asynchronously in a remote, distributed team - Demonstrated ability to lead projects independently and influence technical direction without direct authority

Nice to have - Experience contributing to open-source projects or working in an open-by-default engineering culture - Familiarity with cloud platforms, container orchestration, and infrastructure-as-code tooling
