About this role

Role overview

Create clear, accurate, and usable technical documentation for software development, systems engineering, DevOps, testing, deployment, operations, and end users. This is an authoring role for someone who can learn complex systems directly from engineers and technical subject-matter experts, then build documentation from discussions, demonstrations, diagrams, and source artifacts rather than serving mainly as an editor.

Responsibilities

- Write, review, revise, and maintain documentation for technical systems, software, operational processes, testing, deployment, and user activities. - Interview and collaborate with developers, systems engineers, DevOps personnel, testers, and other specialists to understand workflows and documentation needs. - Produce user guides, developer documentation, operational procedures, troubleshooting content, online help, tutorials, and step-by-step instructions. - Translate complex technical concepts into organized, concise material appropriate for both technical and non-technical audiences. - Create or incorporate diagrams, screenshots, workflows, and other visuals that improve comprehension. - Identify documentation gaps, manage multiple deliverables and deadlines, and keep content current as systems, processes, and requirements change.

Requirements

- Active Top Secret/SCI clearance with polygraph. - Associate’s degree in a technical discipline; two additional years of technical-writing experience may substitute for the degree. - At least two years supporting comparable Federal Government programs or contracts. - Demonstrated ability to independently author documentation from technical source material and subject-matter-expert input. - Experience producing procedure manuals and user-focused content for multiple audiences, with strong organization, communication, and attention to detail. - Ability to learn unfamiliar technologies quickly and collaborate effectively with technical teams.

Nice to have

Understanding of the systems development life cycle; experience documenting Agile or DevSecOps environments; and background creating administration, deployment, troubleshooting, or operations documentation in Federal Government or Intelligence Community settings.

Benefits and work setup

The estimated annual salary range is $100,000–$130,000 USD, with actual compensation influenced by location, education, skills, experience, contract affordability, and organizational needs. The position supports telecommuting and flexible scheduling, with professional development, tuition support, paid time off, retirement matching, medical coverage, and other benefits.
