Role overview
The Senior Test Software Engineer acts as a quality engineering technical authority on civic technology programs, shaping automation strategy and continuous integration practices across multiple product streams. The role extends well beyond conventional testing, partnering with engineers, product managers, and regulatory stakeholders to design scalable test architecture in a multi-vendor environment serving public-sector missions.
Responsibilities
- Define software quality standards, test architecture guidelines, and defect-prevention approaches spanning multiple delivery teams - Architect, build, and maintain scalable end-to-end UI and API test suites using Playwright and TypeScript across several product areas - Collaborate with product, engineering, and regulatory stakeholders early in the development lifecycle to evaluate requirements and surface risks - Track defects end-to-end, lead root cause analysis, and partner with developers on remediation - Author top-level test strategies and comprehensive test plans, and own the full system verification lifecycle - Validate unit tests and pair with developers to confirm code behavior, while serving as a subject matter expert for testing questions
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional experience writing and maintaining testing frameworks for full-stack applications - Hands-on experience testing complex systems that integrate with multiple external services, databases, and third-party APIs - Track record working on cross-functional agile teams, estimating complex tasks, and reporting technical status to client stakeholders - Strong diagnostic skills for troubleshooting distributed, multi-vendor application failures and microservices - Prior experience on federal government digital service or civic technology programs - Experience building synthetic test data generators or complex mock data services for enterprise integrations
