Staff Backend Engineer

Role overview

Provide hands-on technical leadership for web and software platforms supporting interactive live commerce, discovery, community, and transactions. This staff-level individual contributor will lead complex engineering initiatives, shape architecture and shared practices, and help teams deliver reliable customer experiences at scale. The work spans multiple systems and teams, balancing near-term product needs with long-term platform health.

Responsibilities

- Lead technical design and delivery for high-impact initiatives across live digital experiences. - Design and evolve scalable architectures for commerce, discovery, community features, and transactions. - Work through ambiguous problems that cross services and teams, and establish reusable patterns and engineering standards. - Partner with product and design to turn customer and business needs into practical technical solutions. - Contribute directly through prototyping, implementation, reviews, debugging, and resolution of difficult engineering issues. - Improve performance, reliability, security, observability, testing, and deployment safety; lead responses to significant production incidents and convert lessons into lasting improvements. - Mentor engineers, guide technical reviews, and communicate decisions and tradeoffs across technical and nontechnical groups.

Requirements

- At least eight years of professional software engineering experience, including building and operating production systems at scale. - Deep knowledge of modern web and software engineering and scalable architecture. - Strong understanding of APIs, caching, asynchronous processing, cloud infrastructure, performance, and system reliability. - Sound architectural judgment and experience balancing delivery speed with customer experience, operational demands, and long-term technical quality. - Proven ability to navigate ambiguity and influence architecture, engineering standards, or development practices beyond an individual project. - Clear communication skills and a record of mentoring engineers and improving team effectiveness.

Nice to have

- Experience with high-scale consumer marketplaces, e-commerce, live streaming, social or community products, payments, or auctions. - Work on products supporting major live events, fast-changing traffic, or real-time interactions. - Experience with event-driven architectures and consumer web performance, reliability, or conversion improvements.
