Remote job
Staff Backend Engineer (all genders) – Remote within the EU
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Staff-level backend role focused on owning the technical direction of an Order Management module built as a greenfield system. The position involves designing the architecture that translates approved media plans into legally binding orders, spanning the complete order lifecycle, document generation, contract management, and external integrations. The work combines deep hands-on engineering with technical leadership, influencing architectural decisions across the backend platform without direct people management. The position is remote within the EU.
Responsibilities
- Design the order state machine covering draft, internal review, pending signature, and approved/declined transitions, including approval workflows, idempotent transitions, and audit events. - Own the PDF generation pipeline, including templates, reusable fragments, bundles, placeholder resolution, versioning, and scoping across the contract library. - Architect and maintain reliable integrations with internal planning systems and an external e-signature platform, ensuring dependable synchronization through asynchronous processing, retries, reconciliation, and observability. - Drive architectural alignment through design documents and RFCs, define cross-cutting engineering patterns, review complex proposals, and elevate the technical judgment of senior engineers. - Shape how the team adopts AI-assisted engineering tooling responsibly, establishing patterns for generated code review and knowing when AI accelerates versus misleads. - Design performant APIs for dashboards, search, and pipeline visibility, and build systems that remain reliable under failure with strong monitoring and operational excellence.
Requirements
- Extensive experience building and operating production backend systems, including leading the architecture of complex distributed systems. - Deep hands-on experience with event-driven architectures, particularly Kafka, plus a strong grasp of idempotency, event sourcing, state machines, and asynchronous workflows. - Track record designing and operating production-grade microservices, comfortable with retries, reconciliation, eventual consistency, and failure recovery. - Strong Node.js backend expertise covering asynchronous programming, testing, and running services in production. - Comfort defining technical direction in ambiguous, greenfield environments where no established solution exists. - Ability to influence engineers through technical leadership, communicate clearly via design docs and RFCs, identify architectural risks early, and simplify complexity before it becomes a delivery bottleneck.
Nice to have
- Experience in compliance-sensitive domains such as contracts, document workflows, or e-signature platforms.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote working within the EU.
