About this role
Role overview A senior individual contributor role focused on leading the development of perception and AI systems for autonomous robots operating in complex outdoor environments. The work spans computer vision, deep learning, and sensor fusion to support applications such as wildlife-safe robotics, environmental monitoring, and autonomous field platforms. The position combines hands-on model development with technical leadership, mentoring, and collaboration across robotics software teams.
Responsibilities - Lead the design and development of computer vision and deep learning models for robotic perception - Build object detection, semantic segmentation, and instance segmentation systems, including wildlife and species recognition - Develop terrain understanding and traversability analysis algorithms for outdoor autonomy - Implement multi-sensor fusion combining RGB, thermal, LiDAR, radar, GPS, and IMU data - Optimize models for real-time edge deployment and build production inference pipelines - Evaluate AI performance using real-world field data and mentor other AI engineers
Requirements - PhD in Computer Vision, AI, Machine Learning, Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field - At least five years of post-PhD industry experience developing AI systems - Expert-level proficiency in Python and deep practical experience with PyTorch - Demonstrated track record of deploying AI models into production environments - Strong background in object detection, segmentation, classification, and tracking - Experience deploying AI on embedded hardware and a solid mathematical foundation in machine learning and computer vision
Nice to have - Familiarity with CUDA, TensorRT, NVIDIA Jetson, OpenCV, ONNX, Vision Transformers, foundation vision models, multi-modal AI, LiDAR perception, sensor fusion, robotics perception, or wildlife monitoring systems - Publications at top-tier venues such as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ICRA, or RSS - Prior leadership of AI research teams and experience in startups or advanced research settings - Patents, open-source AI contributions, or direct experience deploying AI for autonomous robotics
