Data Engineer

Role overview

This role designs, maintains, and improves data systems that support pharmacy benefit management, analytics, reporting, and healthcare operations. The work combines data engineering, database development, application support, and technical problem-solving in a regulated environment where reliability, maintainability, and data quality are essential.

Responsibilities

- Design, develop, test, debug, and deliver data solutions within an Agile/Scrum development process. - Maintain and enhance SQL/ETL procedures, reporting workflows, scheduled processes, and existing .NET applications. - Support pharmacy claims processes and data submissions, including systems associated with NCPDP Pharmacy Encounter data. - Create technical specifications and evaluate requirements for feasibility, cost, schedule, and long-term maintainability. - Monitor database performance and apply query tuning, indexing, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis techniques. - Collaborate with product owners, engineers, business stakeholders, and cloud or infrastructure teams; communicate risks and mentor colleagues.

Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or at least four years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination. - Extensive SQL Server development experience, including SSIS, SSRS, SSMS, SSAS, relational databases, advanced SQL, database objects, and indexing. - Strong background in database design, normalization, dimensional modeling, OLAP principles, data warehousing, performance optimization, and scalable systems. - Experience with cloud database services such as Azure SQL Database or AWS RDS, as well as high-availability and high-throughput architectures. - Ability to diagnose application and database issues, perform root-cause analysis, and work across multiple technical disciplines. - Strong written and verbal communication, initiative, follow-through, and ability to work independently or collaboratively.

Nice to have

- A master’s degree in a related technical field. - Experience with healthcare technology, pharmacy claims adjudication, NCPDP, HL7, ANSI X12, drug data standards, Medicare Part D, or PDE submissions. - Experience designing solutions across microservice and monolithic architectures and integrating systems with cloud infrastructure.
