Senior Java Engineer

Role overview Develop backend services primarily with Java and Spring Boot, contributing as needed to projects that span additional backend and frontend technologies. The role involves taking ownership across the software lifecycle, working independently across multiple projects, and using evidence to investigate production issues. The position is remote in Costa Rica; the stated experience range is three to five years.

Responsibilities - Build and maintain backend applications with Java and Spring Boot, using Django and Python as supporting technologies. - Contribute to projects involving React, Kafka, GraphQL, SQL, and MongoDB. - Manage development work through building, deployment, merging, and production troubleshooting. - Prioritize work across projects, resolve technical challenges, and use data to investigate operational issues.

Requirements - Three to five years of professional software engineering experience. - Strong Java and Spring Boot expertise, with experience in Django and Python. - React development experience and hands-on work with Kafka and GraphQL. - Experience with SQL databases and/or MongoDB. - Familiarity with software build and deployment processes. - Experience with at least one of Dagster, data lakes, or Amazon Athena, plus the ability to take ownership and work autonomously across projects.

Nice to have - Product management experience supporting prioritization with go-to-market teams and engineers. - Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools such as Claude, Cursor, or Windsurf. - Clear communication, strategic prioritization, comfort with ambiguity, and experience using data to troubleshoot production issues.
