Staff Software Engineer — Java / Spring Platform

Role overview A Staff-level individual contributor position focused on owning the architecture and technical roadmap of a high-throughput Java/Spring platform that processes millions of daily pricing decisions for hotels worldwide. The role drives domain decomposition, modernization of a multi-tenant monolith, and pioneers AI-augmented engineering workflows across distributed US and European teams.

Responsibilities - Own architecture and technical roadmap for a large Java/Spring monolith, leading decomposition into well-defined service boundaries and platform modernization - Design event-driven data flows using AWS Kinesis, SQS/SNS, and Spring Cloud Stream, while improving GraphQL APIs powering pricing, inventory, and demand management - Operate and tune MongoDB, Redis, and PostgreSQL in a high-throughput multi-tenant environment, strengthening observability through OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Prometheus, and Sentry - Pioneer AI-augmented engineering workflows using Claude Code and related tooling, setting standards for AI-assisted development across distributed teams - Drive architectural decisions via design docs and RFCs, establishing patterns for schema evolution, contract testing, and observability - Mentor engineers across US and EU teams, raising the bar for code quality and system design without formal management authority

Requirements - 7+ years building production backend systems at scale - Deep expertise in Java, Spring Framework, Gradle, and JVM performance tuning - Production experience with event-driven architectures (AWS Kinesis, Kafka, or equivalent) - Strong system design fundamentals including domain decomposition, modularity, and schema evolution - AWS production experience across EKS/ECS, S3, SQS/SNS, and IAM - Demonstrated track record of driving architecture decisions through design docs without formal authority

Nice to have - Python proficiency for tooling and automation - MongoDB experience at scale including indexing, aggregation pipelines, and sharding - Hands-on experience with LLM coding agents, prompt engineering, or MCP tooling - Experience evolving large monoliths toward modular or service-oriented architectures - Familiarity with hospitality domain systems such as PMS/CRS, rate management, or demand forecasting
