Staff Engineer (100% Remote within Spain)

Role overview A Staff Engineer will shape the technical direction of a patient-facing marketplace for finding clinicians, comparing profiles, and booking appointments. The platform is moving domain by domain from a long-standing PHP monolith into a monorepo built around API and React vertical slices. The role focuses on making that transition safe and measurable while turning marketplace features into reusable capabilities with clear contracts for other products.

Responsibilities - Set a migration roadmap that identifies the next domains to move, the order of work, and clear completion criteria, including a plan for bookings to become authoritative in the monorepo. - Guide the decomposition of a live monolith, managing service boundaries, data transitions, compatibility, and integration risks. - Define versioned contracts that allow other products to consume marketplace capabilities without bespoke connections. - Use AI coding agents to prototype difficult migration and integration work, retaining responsibility for architecture, review, correctness, and security. - Develop AI-assisted engineering practices for understanding legacy code, generating contracts and tests, and preserving parity between systems. - Work with engineering and product leaders to plan and unblock cross-team delivery; mentor senior engineers and share technical practices.

Requirements - Track record of setting technical direction across several teams and delivering decisions that hold up in production. - Experience safely modernizing a large system while it serves real users, including strangler patterns, anti-corruption layers, data migrations, and dual-write risks. - Strong backend architecture and distributed-systems knowledge, with comfort in a polyglot environment. - Hands-on use of AI for software development, including directing coding agents and maintaining control of design, correctness, and security. - Commitment to mentoring engineers and improving technical decision-making. - Fluent English.

Nice to have - Experience with marketplaces, search, discovery, bookings, or scheduling. - Experience running a large monorepo, including build tooling, code ownership, and shared conventions. - Experience exposing product capabilities to AI agents, or working in healthcare or another regulated domain.
