Hardware Design Engineer

Role overview

An automation and material handling engineering firm is hiring an Electrical Controls Hardware Designer to develop motor control panels and the systems that drive conveyor equipment. Projects span freight and parcel, baggage handling, warehouse distribution, and manufacturing applications, covering everything from initial concept through panel commissioning and final checkout. The role works closely with sales engineers, project managers, and customers to turn specifications into compliant, buildable designs.

Responsibilities

- Confer with sales engineers, project managers, customers, and other stakeholders to clarify project specifications, scope, and design requirements - Prepare detailed drawing sets including power feed calculations, 480V power schematics, 120V control schematics, I/O drawings, field device layouts, PLC layouts, and panel layouts - Prepare specifications for the purchase of materials and equipment needed to execute the project scope - Operate computer-assisted engineering and design software to produce accurate, code-compliant documentation - Inspect, audit, and test completed motor control panels for sound construction and adherence to design standards

Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering - Strong active listening and reading comprehension skills for working with project documents and customer requirements - Demonstrated critical thinking and troubleshooting ability when reviewing alternative design approaches - Deductive reasoning and the ability to recognize when a design or system is likely to fail - Skill in information ordering, applying rules consistently across complex drawings and specifications - Great attitude, solid work ethic, and sound judgment

Nice to have

- Prior exposure to material handling applications such as freight and parcel, baggage handling, warehouse distribution, or manufacturing conveyor systems - Experience with PLC hardware layout and panel commissioning
