About this role

Role overview The position focuses on advancing a peer-to-peer mesh networking platform that keeps devices synchronized and operational even when traditional internet connectivity is unavailable or unreliable. The senior engineer will own core components spanning overlay networking and physical transports, shaping routing protocols, transport mechanisms, and edge platform architecture for systems deployed across aviation, retail, hospitality, defense, and other demanding environments. This is a remote, senior individual-contributor role suited to engineers who thrive on low-level systems work and complex distributed problems.

Responsibilities - Design, implement, and own components of an overlay networking and transport stack, including routing, virtual connections, channel lifecycle, and physical transports such as BLE, LAN, Wi-Fi Aware, and AWDL. - Lead the re-architecture of the networking stack toward a modular, scalable, high-performance design with clean interfaces between transport layers and mesh abstractions. - Investigate and systematically resolve real-world connectivity issues, including data transfer reliability, MTU negotiation, pairing instability, throughput ceilings, and cross-platform sync behavior. - Build and tune transport mechanisms with explicit attention to flow control, backpressure, congestion handling, retries, connection lifecycle management, and failure recovery. - Track down performance bottlenecks across latency, memory footprint, CPU utilization, and tail behavior in highly concurrent asynchronous systems. - Design protocol state machines, wire formats, and transport abstractions that remain correct under intermittent connectivity and resource-constrained environments. - Establish observability through targeted logging, metrics, and diagnostics to support fast production debugging and root-cause analysis.

Requirements - 5+ years of professional systems software experience, including 3+ years focused on networking, transport protocols, or routing. - Strong proficiency in Rust or C++, including ownership and borrowing semantics, async runtimes, concurrency primitives, and profiling or optimization techniques. - Working understanding of TCP, UDP, and QUIC, covering connection establishment, congestion and flow control, retransmission behavior, MTU and fragmentation, and the practical implications for latency, throughput, and reliability. - Demonstrated ability to debug complex behavior in networked and concurrent systems, including race conditions, deadlocks, resource leaks, and latency spikes. - Experience designing modular APIs and abstractions that scale across multiple implementations and evolve safely over time. - Clear written and verbal communication skills suitable for a distributed, asynchronous team.

Nice to have - Experience with mesh networking protocols, routing algorithms, or gossip protocols. - Familiarity with mobile platform constraints, including background execution models, battery optimization, and OS suspension and resume cycles. - Hands-on experience with Apple Core Bluetooth or Android Wi-Fi Aware APIs. - Background in Linux networking, sockets, async I/O, or other low-level systems programming. - Willingness to travel roughly once per quarter for in-person team gatherings.

Benefits and work setup - Competitive compensation with meaningful equity for every team member. - Region-appropriate benefits; in the US this includes health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, a 401(k), and flexible spending accounts. - Flexible time off regardless of location. - Fully remote work, with an optional physical office available for those who want a place to work or meet teammates. - Commitment to inclusive hiring and equal opportunity employment.
