Role overview
Build the knowledge architecture and retrieval systems that give enterprise agents the right context for each task. This senior backend-focused role covers the design of a layered knowledge model, ingestion and retrieval pipelines, and governed access to customer information, with correctness and data isolation treated as core product requirements. The position is based in London or available remotely.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and scale a three-tier knowledge architecture spanning organisational, functional, and individual user contexts. - Develop ingestion, chunking, indexing, and retrieval pipelines for varied customer knowledge bases. - Improve retrieval quality through measurable evaluation, systematic experimentation, and production feedback rather than subjective assessment. - Integrate governed access controls into the retrieval path so information is available only within the appropriate permissions and environment. - Maintain an architecture in which customer data remains within its designated environment. - Collaborate with platform and applied-AI engineers to make retrieval dependable for real agent workflows.
Requirements
- Proven experience building and operating retrieval-augmented generation or other production retrieval systems. - Strong understanding of vector stores, embeddings, indexing strategies, and retrieval evaluation. - Solid backend engineering experience, including designing maintainable services and data pipelines. - Practical knowledge of data governance, access control, and information isolation. - A quality-first approach to engineering, with attention to correctness and traceability in regulated settings. - Ability to make sound technical decisions when retrieval quality, security, and operational constraints interact.
