Role overview
A short-term contractor engagement is open for a senior backend engineer to help build the publishing and query layer of a large, enterprise-scale Knowledge Graph. The work centers on resilient, cloud-native services that deliver governed product information with full data provenance, using C#, ASP.NET Core, and Azure. It is a hands-on engineering role where the architecture, ontology, and data modelling are owned by separate specialist teams, allowing the successful candidate to focus on clean API design, robust service engineering, and AI-assisted development practices.
Responsibilities
- Develop backend services and APIs with C# and ASP.NET Core, including publishing and query components running on Azure. - Build a shared rules library used consistently across both publishing and query services. - Integrate with graph, data platform, and external service interfaces, producing validated JSON-LD responses that include source and provenance information. - Implement validation, logging, security controls, and automated tests, including regression coverage for publication rules, disclaimers, and other safety-critical behaviour. - Add guarded graph queries that reject unsupported or prohibited responses. - Support deployment, documentation, and operational handover, collaborating with architecture, data engineering, DevOps, and QA.
Requirements
- Solid professional experience with C# and .NET backend development. - Track record of building and testing ASP.NET Core APIs in production. - Comfort working with JSON and integrating against external systems. - Familiarity with cloud deployment practices and CI/CD pipelines. - Strong communication and collaboration skills across distributed teams. - Hands-on experience with AI-driven development tooling such as Cursor and Codex.
Nice to have
- Experience with Azure Functions or Container Apps. - Familiarity with Neo4j, Cypher, MCP, JSON-LD, or schema.org. - Background in regulated or consumer-product environments.
