Job details
About this role
Role overview A hands-on technical lead role for embedded device software at a US-based clean energy hardware company. The position owns firmware architecture end to end for a meter socket adapter product line that connects rooftop solar, EV charging, and home battery storage, and includes work on a new device-to-device communication standard for home batteries and vehicle-to-home systems.
Responsibilities - Own the overall device software architecture across data acquisition, real-time control, communication, and integration subsystems. - Architect and implement safety-critical software, including the FMEA, safety case, and certification engagement with a NRTL. - Design revenue-grade metering including data acquisition, signal processing, and calibration. - Partner with electrical engineering on hardware/software co-design, board bring-up, and cross-boundary debugging. - Own the secure firmware update path, including secure boot, code signing, key management, and verified over-the-air delivery. - Lead a small team of firmware engineers through scoping, delegation, code review, and direct contribution.
Requirements - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, with 7+ years of firmware experience shipping new products at scale. - Expert-level proficiency in C, C++, and/or Rust, with deep embedded debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG/SWD. - Bare-metal and RTOS experience on modern 32-bit microcontrollers, including low-level architecture and multi-core memory optimization. - Track record of leading the technical direction of a project, partitioning work for others, and still shipping code personally. - Discipline to drive a complex safety certification to completion with rigorous documentation and design diagrams. - Sophisticated use of AI coding tools paired with full personal ownership of every shipped decision.
Nice to have - Master's degree in a relevant engineering or computer science field. - Prior experience taking safety-critical software through NRTL certification. - Familiarity with Matter/Thread commissioning, embedded TCP/IP stacks such as lwIP, WireGuard, and PKI for firmware signing. - Experience with protocols like I2C, UART, SPI, CAN/CAN-FD, and Ethernet, plus build systems such as Make or CMake and CI/CD pipelines. - Knowledge of standards including UL 1741, IEEE 1547, UL 3141, UL 2900, and ANSI C12.1.
Benefits and work setup - US salary range of $155,000 to $175,000. - Health insurance with 75% employer coverage for employees, spouses, and children. - Flexible paid time off, 401(k) with company match, and equity stock options. - Remote, hybrid, or on-site arrangements across the United States, with headquarters near Center City, Philadelphia.
