Senior Manager, Applied Science

Role overview

A senior leadership role focused on building and scaling applied AI capabilities that automate and augment complex clinical and administrative healthcare workflows. The position is a player-coach model, combining hands-on technical contributions with team leadership, and owns the full lifecycle of machine learning solutions from problem framing through deployment and monitoring. Work centers on structured and unstructured healthcare data to power intelligent systems that support prior authorization and broader clinical decision-making.

Responsibilities

- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of applied scientists, cultivating a collaborative, high-performance environment - Translate complex healthcare business and clinical problems into scalable machine learning and data science solutions - Validate models with methodological and statistical rigor so they are reliable, reproducible, and safe for clinical use - Partner with AI engineering to scale and deploy solutions that create measurable healthcare impact - Collaborate cross-functionally with clinical operations, product, engineering, and platform teams to align research with business priorities - Communicate technical concepts, methodologies, and insights clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders - Contribute to recruiting, onboarding, and ongoing development of team members

Requirements

- PhD with 7+ years of experience, or MS with 10+ years of experience, in machine learning, data science, or applied AI - Minimum of 2+ years leading and managing technical teams - Production experience leveraging both modern language models and classical ML techniques - Strong background in statistical methods, experimental design, and model evaluation - Proficiency in Python and experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or scikit-learn - Hands-on experience working with AWS infrastructure

Nice to have

- Background in transactional healthcare areas such as utilization management, payment integrity, risk adjustment, quality, or care management - Experience using language models to drive process automation in healthcare settings - Familiarity with retrieval and relational extraction applied to unstructured clinical notes and patient history documentation
