Job details
About this role
Role overview This role joins a five-person energy development team building Python packages on top of the Home Energy Model to support next-generation energy performance assessment. The work sits at the intersection of software engineering and decarbonisation, collaborating with a UK government department, external partners, and internal domain experts. It also carries a people-leadership dimension, with responsibility for line managing one or more developers.
Responsibilities - Design, build, and improve Python packages used for modelling, simulation, and data processing. - Lead engineering decisions, architecture discussions, and technical problem solving across the team. - Translate analytical and modelling needs into shippable, maintainable software. - Line manage one or more developers, including one-to-ones, objective setting, performance reviews, and development support. - Mentor colleagues through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing while maintaining high standards for testing and documentation. - Drive continuous improvement in tools, processes, and engineering standards, owning deliverables end-to-end.
Requirements - Strong professional experience as a Python developer, at or near senior level, with excellent command of Python and its ecosystem. - A track record of building production-grade applications, ideally in data-rich or scientific domains, producing clean, maintainable, well-tested code. - Experience line managing or formally mentoring developers, or a clear motivation to step into line management. - Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to explain technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences. - Experience working effectively in multidisciplinary settings.
Nice to have - Familiarity with Pydantic and JSON Schema, plus experience with GitLab CI/CD pipelines. - A strong grasp of geometry and physics, ideally including building physics, and an understanding of decarbonisation and energy systems. - Experience supporting the growth of junior engineers through onboarding or coaching.
Benefits and work setup The role is remote within the UK with optional in-person collaboration at offices in Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, or London. Hours are flexible between 32 and 40 per week, salary starts at £50,000 depending on experience, and visa sponsorship is not available. Benefits include 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays with a buy and sell policy, a group pension scheme, an enhanced maternity and paternity policy, an eye care policy, a cycle to work scheme, and an employee assistance programme.
