Senior QA Automation Engineer

Role overview A senior engineering position focused on standing up a QA automation practice for a long-established, large-scale application with deep historical complexity. The role blends hands-on framework development with strategic input, working alongside the QA Automation Manager to shape architecture, coding standards, and coverage from the ground up. It is suited to an engineer who enjoys both designing automation systems and applying them to real testing problems across a mature codebase.

Responsibilities - Architect and evolve the core QA automation framework using TypeScript and Playwright, including reusable components, fixtures, configuration, environment handling, and reporting. - Design, implement, and maintain automated tests across end-to-end browser, API, integration, and database validation layers. - Define coding standards and best practices for test structure, error handling, logging, retries, isolation, and failure diagnostics, and participate in code reviews. - Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, designing quality gates, parallel execution, and test-selection strategies in partnership with DevOps and engineering. - Validate application and database state through SQL queries, work with relational schemas and stored procedures, and manage test data for repeatable runs. - Triage automation failures to distinguish product defects from automation, data, environment, or infrastructure issues, and address architectural problems before they destabilize the suite.

Requirements - Senior-level experience designing and maintaining automated end-to-end and API tests, with the ability to develop deep Playwright expertise quickly. - Strong grasp of automation architecture, reusable abstractions, test isolation, configuration management, error handling, and debugging. - Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases, including query construction for data validation and test setup. - Practical experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and improving execution reliability. - Track record of diagnosing complex automation failures across application, test, environment, data, and infrastructure layers. - Clear written and verbal communication, cross-discipline collaboration, and the ability to independently own problems end-to-end.

Nice to have - Introducing automation into a mature or legacy application with significant existing functionality and technical debt. - Helping to establish a new QA automation team, practice, or testing platform, including mentoring junior or mid-level engineers. - Deep hands-on Playwright experience with fixtures, parallel execution, network interception or mocking, tracing, and debugging. - Building Node.js or PowerShell utilities, working with stored procedures and complex relational systems, and improving reliability of large regression suites.
