Role overview
This technical lead database engineering role is responsible for the performance, reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency of a large PostgreSQL estate supporting a modern SaaS product. You will work closely with backend engineers, product managers, QA, and technical leads to shape data models before implementation, keep production systems healthy, and make database usage easier and safer for development teams. The position is remote and connected to a US-based engineering organization.
Responsibilities
- Operate and improve more than 100 managed databases, maintaining strong performance, security, availability, and data integrity. - Monitor database health, investigate bottlenecks, and turn findings into practical remediation and optimization work. - Manage capacity planning and database economics through right-sizing, demand forecasting, seasonal preparation, and investment recommendations. - Review query plans, slow queries, indexes, table bloat, autovacuum behavior, and connection pooling across the fleet. - Refine schemas, migrations, and complex SQL in partnership with engineering teams, and review data designs for new features before development begins. - Reduce maintenance downtime, establish database standards, and mentor engineers in SQL, modeling, and operational best practices.
Requirements
- At least five years of database engineering experience managing and optimizing production systems. - Five or more years writing SQL, with substantial experience using PostgreSQL and relational database systems. - Strong diagnostic skills for database performance issues and a record of implementing reliable, low-downtime solutions. - Experience with managed cloud database infrastructure, preferably Amazon RDS or a comparable service. - Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to explain tradeoffs and build agreement across teams. - A strong focus on data integrity, accessibility, scalability, and customer impact.
Nice to have
- Experience with data warehousing techniques for analytics and reporting. - Programming experience in Python, Java, or Kotlin.
