About this role
Role overview A higher education consultancy is hiring a UI Developer as a 1099 contract consultant to build the front-end layer of an AI-powered application running natively on the Azure Databricks platform. The work centers on a React shell, its authentication layer, and the data integration that connects the interface to a Databricks lakehouse, replacing legacy Power BI views with a modern application experience. It is a hands-on build role inside a fast-moving delivery sprint that ships standardized experiences across multiple institutional deployments.
Responsibilities - Build and own the React shell, data visualization views, and configurable Portals that end users interact with. - Implement authentication and secure, role-aware access using Databricks AppKit with Entra ID and Azure AD federation. - Integrate the interface with governed data by querying curated SQL views, semantic models, and catalog data in the Databricks lakehouse. - Wire the front end to conversational Genie Spaces so users can ask data questions in plain language. - Partner with data engineers, functional subject matter experts, and product management to ship high-quality, standardized experiences across multiple institution deployments.
Requirements - Strong proficiency in TypeScript and Python, with hands-on experience in modern frameworks built on those languages such as React and Dash. - State management and data fetching experience using those frameworks and their supporting libraries. - Server-side scaffolding, structuring, and deployment experience with frameworks such as Node.js and Python. - Familiarity with authentication patterns and secure access, including OAuth and identity federation. - Ability to query catalog data from Lakebase or other structured SQL configurations to power views and interfaces.
Nice to have - Experience with UX or visual design and a track record of turning complex data into clear, usable interfaces. - Exposure to Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, or Unity Catalog and other lakehouse-based data platforms. - Experience delivering in higher education, analytics, or other data-intensive SaaS environments.
Benefits and work setup - 1099 project-based contract with remote work and flexible assignment scheduling suited to independent consultants. - Opportunity to collaborate with other consultants on higher education engagements that vary in scope and challenge, supporting institutions as they modernize data and analytics capabilities.
