Job details
About this role
Role overview A Staff Software Engineer role on the Datastore team for a precision medicine company transforming brain health from clinical development to clinical care. The position centers on designing and scaling backend data infrastructure rather than end-user product surfaces, including PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, and a GraphQL API. It is a 100% remote role within the U.S., with in-person hubs in Boston, New York City, and Paris, and the company is hiring two engineers into this profile with distinct areas of focus.
Responsibilities - Lead design and architecture for complex systems within the Datastore, weighing implementation trade-offs and backing decisions with data - Partner with product managers, scientific and clinical stakeholders, and other development teams to translate requirements into integrations, services, and platform solutions - Debug and profile ambiguous problems that cross system boundaries, leaving code, tooling, and structure better than you found them - Draft RFCs to lead complex feature discovery and technical design, soliciting input and aligning the team - Own pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots into the warehouse and collaborate across platform, application, and scientific teams on APIs
Requirements - Significant experience writing complex SQL by hand and reasoning about schema design, indexes, and query behavior - Background designing event-driven pipelines end-to-end, including producers, consumers, replay, idempotency, and backpressure handling - For one track: deep PostgreSQL expertise including query planning, index selection, EXPLAIN (ANALYZE), zero-downtime migrations, replication, and operations - For the other track: GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js) fluency, leading API design across the platform - Experience leading design of complex systems rather than individual components - Comfort with row-level security and schema-driven API generation (PostGraphile-style workflows)
Nice to have - Experience or interest in using LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production with appropriate guardrails
Benefits and work setup - US-based salary range of $170,000–$190,000, plus equity, PTO, and other benefits - Fully remote within the U.S. with asynchronous work practices, plus optional in-person hubs
