Role overview A remote mobile game studio building long-running social free-to-play titles is hiring a Systems & Economy Designer to shape progression, currencies, and monetization in mature, layered live games. The work centers on diagnosing complex economy problems, modeling outcomes, and iterating on systems that have evolved over many years. Depending on experience, the role can be scoped at intermediate or senior level, with senior candidates taking on more ambiguous problems and mentoring teammates.
Responsibilities - Design, balance, and iterate on progression systems, currencies, reward structures, and monetization mechanics across live titles - Investigate economy and systems issues, identify root causes, and propose durable solutions - Build spreadsheet models to simulate progression, balance economies, and forecast outcomes - Lead design initiatives end-to-end, partnering with product, engineering, creative, and community teammates - Use data, player behaviour, and community sentiment to guide decisions and measure impact - Contribute to a live-ops on-call rotation several days per month to respond to urgent issues - Improve internal tools, documentation, and processes, including scripting and automation - Stay plugged into player discussions and trends in the free-to-play mobile market
Requirements - 3-5 years of game design experience with a focus on systems or economy work - Hands-on experience with free-to-play games, ideally live-service mobile titles - Strong grasp of F2P economies, progression loops, monetization, and retention mechanics - Spreadsheet modeling skills for simulating balance or economic outcomes - Ability to translate quantitative findings into player-behaviour insights
Nice to have - Experience mentoring other designers or contributing to team development
