Senior AI Engineer, Backend & Integrations

Role overview

Build and operate the backend services that let AI features work safely with business data and live systems. The role spans APIs, integrations, data retrieval, and production oversight, with a focus on making model-driven workflows reliable, secure, and observable when they affect real operations.

Responsibilities

- Design services, APIs, and tool interfaces that allow AI features to read from and act on internal systems. - Integrate relational databases and business platforms such as accounting, ERP, and payroll systems, with clear access controls. - Build retrieval across structured and unstructured data, choosing appropriately among queries, search indexes, and models. - Implement authentication, authorization, validation, rate limits, audit trails, and human review for consequential actions. - Establish evaluation, tracing, and monitoring, then use production evidence to improve system behavior. - Coordinate with frontend engineering on API contracts, streaming, and end-to-end error handling.

Requirements

- Experience designing, shipping, and operating production backend services. - Strong skills in at least one backend language, such as TypeScript/Node.js, Python, Go, or C#. - Solid SQL and data modeling skills, plus experience with third-party API integrations. - Practical experience using language models in applications, including tool or function calling, structured output, retrieval, and prompt design. - A security-minded approach to access and permissions, and the ability to learn unfamiliar technologies with sound judgment.

Nice to have

- Familiarity with agent frameworks or protocols such as MCP. - Experience with event-driven systems, queues, or background processing. - Cloud infrastructure, containers, or CI/CD experience. - Work in regulated areas such as finance, payroll, identity, or public services.
