Member of Technical Staff, Engineering

Role overview A nonprofit research organization is hiring an engineer to help develop an autonomous AI system aimed at exploring fundamental questions in theoretical physics. The position involves building tools and infrastructure that support hypothesis generation, simulation, peer review, and self-revision within a closed-loop research engine. This is a remote, Canada-based engineering role focused on combining generative AI, symbolic reasoning, and research automation.

Responsibilities - Design and code components of an autonomous research engine, including modules for hypothesis generation, physics-based simulation, peer review, validation against experimental data, and self-revision. - Write safe, testable code and establish automated unit tests that surface bugs early and incorporate lessons from recent research. - Explore and integrate state-of-the-art generative AI tools and APIs to extend the platform's analytical capabilities. - Add self-improvement features that must pass automated checks before deployment. - Track runtime metrics, surface performance bottlenecks, and propose optimizations for efficiency and sustainability. - Build custom solutions such as algorithms and data analysis tooling tailored to researcher workflows, and collaborate with stakeholders to define requirements and prioritize delivery.

Requirements - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field. - Solid grasp of common software architecture patterns and best practices. - Demonstrated experience with web development and API integrations. - Strong programming skills across relevant languages and tooling. - Hands-on proficiency with generative AI tools and their practical applications. - Clear communication skills, including the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences. - Comfort working both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
