Software Engineer I, Backend (Collections)

Role overview

A junior backend engineering role on a Collections team within a Repayments organization, focused on building platforms that maximize the recovery of delinquent customers by delivering the right message to the right people at the right time. The work spans monitoring, problem detection, and ensuring high reliability of the underlying engineering systems. Engineers partner with product managers, risk teams, and adjacent engineering groups to manage loans through their delinquency lifecycle and keep the overall portfolio healthy.

Responsibilities

- Contribute to team projects and goals with guidance from peers and leads - Collaborate proactively with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders, communicating risks and trade-offs early - Balance delivery speed with quality so business targets are met without compromising system uptime - Engage in growth and development activities that strengthen the team's community and craft - Build and operate backend services that support high-availability collections workflows

Requirements

- Prior work or internship experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale - Hands-on proficiency with Python or Kotlin - Familiarity with distributed systems fundamentals and technologies such as AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes - Ability to translate a simple business scenario into a solution spanning several software components, expressed as clear, well-tested, extensible code - Comfort navigating a large codebase, debugging others' code, and providing constructive feedback in code reviews - Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration across a globally distributed engineering organization
